Trump Sets New Deadline for Putin: Time to Reach Peace in Ukraine Shrinks

Chas Pravdy - 31 July 2025 12:02

The global stage is once again witnessing a complex geopolitical and energy crisis stemming from the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Former U.S.
President Donald Trump has unexpectedly intensified pressure on the Kremlin, advocating for a faster peace process and an end to military hostilities.
Choosing the perfect timing, he made these remarks during a visit to Turnberry golf club, where Ukrainian issues became central to his political maneuvers.
Trump announced that he is giving Vladimir Putin approximately 10–12 days to agree to peace negotiations; otherwise, the world and the United States will implement a series of stringent measures. Earlier, Trump had set a 50-day deadline for Russia to cease hostilities, but despite diplomatic efforts and numerous phone calls with Moscow, it became evident that Moscow is merely stalling, consolidating its military position rather than seeking peace.
Trump believes that Putin exploits U.S.
ultimatums and promises to buy additional time for military strengthening.
Experts suggest that Moscow is aware that continued sanctions and economic restrictions from the U.S.
could undermine its military capacity and imperial ambitions. Plans are underway to impose new sanctions on countries that continue trading with Russia, especially in the energy sector.
A bipartisan group of U.S.
senators is considering secondary sanctions of up to 500% on nations importing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other goods, with potential targets including China and India.
This added pressure threatens Moscow's revenue streams, which remain heavily reliant on energy exports. Amid growing tensions and military setbacks in Eastern Ukraine, Russia faces resource shortages, and ongoing operations are failing to produce desired results.
U.S.
allies and policymakers are preparing new measures, while Moscow grapples with internal political pressures and increased dissatisfaction among the elite.
Recent reports of territorial losses and operational failures highlight the difficulty Russia faces. Analysts warn that if Moscow continues to ignore deadlines and ultimatums, the conflict and diplomatic deadlock could persist, with devastating consequences.
The new U.S.
deadline provides Ukraine and the international community a crucial opportunity to pursue diplomatic solutions and potentially reduce the scope of the conflict.
