European Union Affirms Support for Ukraine: Funding to Continue Despite Reforms in Anti-Corruption Bodies
Following recent political debates surrounding reforms of Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, such as NABU and SAP, the European Union has officially reaffirmed its unwavering support and commitment to continue funding the country without interruption.
In response to questions from 'Europravda,' European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mergier emphasized that the EU does not plan to freeze or reduce financial aid to Ukraine in the near future.
His remarks came amid the Ukrainian parliament’s approval of bill №13533, aimed at restoring and ensuring the independence of key anti-corruption institutions like NABU and SAP, along with additional safeguards for their operations.
Mergier highlighted that maintaining the independence of anti-corruption bodies and implementing necessary reforms to uphold the rule of law remain the top priorities.
According to him, EU support remains firm, and there are no plans to halt funding regarding this matter at present.
This stance is particularly relevant considering recent legislative decisions, notably the passing of bill №12414, which drew criticism from the EU due to its potential impact on the independence of NABU and SAP.
It is worth noting that these actions by the Ukrainian parliament triggered a serious response from EU partners, who warned Kyiv of possible consequences if the country fails to fully rescind the provisions of bill №12414.
Amid these developments, many experts emphasize the importance of maintaining political stability and the independence of vital anti-corruption institutions to ensure Ukraine’s integration into the EU.
Thus, despite political challenges and internal conflicts, the EU clearly communicates that its financial support remains stable and directed towards backing reforms and fighting corruption in Ukraine—an area currently crucial for Kyiv’s European aspirations.
