Ukraine Nears Development of Its Own Ballistic Missile System: Shmyhal’s Statements and Military Progress
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that the country is on the verge of a major breakthrough in the development of its domestic ballistic missile technology.
In a recent interview with BBC, he confirmed that Ukraine will soon have the capability to produce its own ballistic rockets.
These claims are made amidst ongoing efforts by the government and military to enhance national defense capabilities, especially in light of increased preparation for potential military actions and technological advancements.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously emphasized that developing such weapons is a crucial element of strengthening the country’s security and independence.
He mentioned that the Ukrainian leadership has tasked the development of an independent ballistic missile system, a goal which Shmyhal reaffirmed, saying, “We are very close to achieving this.” According to him, this is all he can publicly disclose at this stage.
Beyond missile technology, the minister discussed strategies for negotiations with Russia.
He stated that resolving the conflict requires a dual approach: active military measures, including delivery of modern weapons to achieve parity or advantage, and economic sanctions that would financially weaken the enemy.
“Without these two components, negotiations might remain fruitless — Russia could simply keep us in a diplomatic cycle,” Shmyhal explained.
On June 14, Deputy Defense Minister Anatoliy Klochko mentioned that Ukraine would soon provide more concrete updates regarding its progress in developing its ballistic missile capability, indicating that significant technological advances have already been made.
President Zelensky has repeatedly stressed the importance of rapidly developing Ukraine’s offensive and defensive capabilities, particularly in missile defense, as a key element of national security.
