UK Supreme Court Upholds Sanctions Against Russian Oligarch Yevgeny Shvilder in Landmark Case, Reinforcing Sanctions Regime

Chas Pravdy - 30 July 2025 00:00

In a decisive verdict that echoes across the landscape of international sanctions, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom approved the appeal dismissal of Russian billionaire Yevgeny Shvilder, who sought to challenge the sanctions imposed on him following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The majority of justices affirmed the legitimacy of the sanctions regime, emphasizing that it serves an essential purpose in responding to Russian aggression and safeguarding national security.
Shvilder, a dual British-American citizen with ties to major Russian companies such as the steel producer Evraz and ownership links to Chelsea Football Club, argued that his sanctions were unfair and politically motivated.
Nevertheless, the court’s ruling underscores that the UK government’s measures are well-founded and necessary to deter business ties with Russia amid ongoing hostilities. This case sets a precedent for other sanctioned individuals and entities attempting legal challenges against measures designed to pressure Russia.
Legal experts highlight that the decision reflects the judiciary’s unwavering stance on the importance of sanctions in countering Russian expansionism.
Shvilder's wealth, estimated at around 1.6 billion dollars, was not sufficient to sway the court, which prioritized national security concerns over personal and financial interests. Furthermore, the ruling indicated that sanctions provide a clear deterrent message to Russian-linked business actors, signaling that disengagement from Russian markets and investments is crucial.
A separate dissenting opinion criticized the sanctions as insufficiently justified and questioned their proportionality, especially considering the case of companies like BP that also maintained ties with Russian state-controlled enterprises.
Overall, the decision affirms the UK’s firm stance in defending its sanctions framework and sends a strong message to those contemplating legal challenges against it.
