Moldovan President Warns of Russian Interference in Upcoming Elections

Chas Pravdy - 30 July 2025 12:41

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has explicitly accused Russia of orchestrating a large-scale and unprecedented intervention aimed at influencing the country's political landscape ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for September.
According to her, Moscow is preparing a series of disruptive scenarios involving funding through oligarch Ilan Shor, who has fled the country, as well as mobilizing allies within Moldova to sway the electoral process.
She highlighted concerns over organized disinformation campaigns, paid protests, and attempts to sabotage voting in the diaspora.
Equally alarming are potential cyberattacks targeting voting infrastructure and critical systems, which could jeopardize the legitimacy of the elections.
Sandu emphasized the importance of resilience, urging state agencies to work cohesively and professionally to safeguard national sovereignty and the country's European integration prospects.
She also pointed out the use of religious institutions, opinion leaders, and online influencers to disseminate messages opposing Moldova’s pro-European aspirations.
The upcoming elections are set for September 28, with recent developments including the rejection of the registration of the pro-Russian 'Victory' bloc linked to Shor by the Central Election Commission.
The president called on citizens to stay vigilant, unite, and proactively defend the democratic institutions and independence of Moldova.
