Macron criticizes EU’s insufficient ‘deterrent’ to Trump over trade deals
French President Emmanuel Macron has recently expressed his disappointment regarding the European Union’s ability to leverage its most powerful economic and diplomatic tools to create a genuine sense of caution among the United States in trade negotiations.
According to his statements, the EU failed to implement the necessary measures to persuade Washington of the importance of revisiting and improving trade agreements.
Macron emphasized that Europe must demonstrate greater strength and decisiveness in negotiations, as the current approach leads the US to perceive Europe as less significant, thereby diminishing its chances of securing more favorable terms.
During his recent ministerial meetings, the French leader highlighted the importance of unity and active diplomacy to counterbalance external pressures, especially in light of Trump's administration imposing tariffs and trade restrictions, which threaten to significantly alter the global economic landscape.
Although many European leaders welcomed the trade deal, France positioned itself as a critic, openly questioning the agreement’s impact and warning of possible negative consequences for the continent’s economy.
Macron also underscored that the story is not over yet, and Europe still has the opportunity to regain its strength and influence in future negotiations, staying committed to achieving fair and balanced trade conditions for all parties involved.
