Donald Trump announces 25% tariffs on India over energy and military purchases from Russia
In an unexpected move, former U.S.
President Donald Trump revealed plans to impose substantial tariffs on India.
From August 1, the United States will implement a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, citing reasons such as trade barriers and India’s procurement of energy and weapons from Russia.
Trump highlighted that India’s tariffs are among the highest in the world, which hampers economic cooperation and inadvertently supports Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The U.S.
government emphasizes that India is one of the largest buyers of Russian energy and purchases significant arms from Moscow.
This policy stance contradicts international efforts to isolate Russia and end its aggression.
Starting August 1, India will face not only the 25% tariff but also additional penalties for such dealings.
This announcement is part of broader U.S.
trade and diplomatic maneuvering, including warnings about continued Russian oil imports under sanctions and calls for a swift resolution to the Ukraine conflict, analysts say.
