UK Promises Recognition of Palestine in September if Gaza Ceasefire Is Not Achieved by Then

The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office has articulated its stance regarding the potential recognition of Palestine as an independent state in September of this year.
However, this move hinges on Israel’s willingness to agree to a long-term ceasefire in Gaza by that time.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made this announcement following a cabinet meeting, emphasizing the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
He stated that the British government strongly supports the two-state solution and is prepared to recognize Palestine before the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly to bolster efforts towards peace and stability.
Nevertheless, this decision will depend on the situation on the ground and Israel’s actions to ensure security and humanitarian access.
If Israel does not take decisive steps to end the conflict and commit to a sustainable peace process by September, the UK will proceed with formal recognition of Palestine.
This stance has sparked significant international debate, especially since France earlier announced its intention to recognize Palestine in September, becoming the first Security Council member and G7 country to do so.
Palestinian officials welcomed Paris’s move, while Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu condemned it, stating that such recognition 'rewards terrorism' following Hamas’s attack in Israel on October 7, 2023.
Meanwhile, U.S.
officials have urged caution and emphasized that any decision will depend on how the situation develops in the region.
