Ukrainian MFA Responds to Russian Speaker’s Participation in Geneva Conference: Criticism and Sanctions
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine sharply condemned the participation of Valentina Matviyenko, the principal speaker of the Russian Federation’s Federation Council, at the international conference for parliamentary speakers held in Geneva.
MFA spokesperson Georgiy Tykhyi expressed strong disapproval of her presence, labeling her as 'being on the defendant’s bench,' and emphasized that her access to the Swiss capital was disgraceful given her support for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
According to Tykhyi, Matviyenko bears individual responsibility for crimes committed by Russia, including genocide against the Ukrainian people, and her presence is a regrettable manifestation of the international community's indifference.
The diplomat urged conference participants to refrain from shaking her hand, describing her as a 'woman with Ukrainian blood on her hands.' Ukraine has consistently insisted that Valentina Matviyenko should face justice at The Hague, where an international tribunal for crimes of aggression against Ukraine is already underway.
This decision aligns with the broader sanctions imposed on Russian participants by the European Union and neutral Switzerland.
Amid these events, Swiss intelligence services warned of the high threat level of espionage by Russia and China, especially amid increasing global tensions.
According to media reports, about 20% of Russian spies operating within Europe are active in Switzerland, and their activities are potentially escalating in the context of international conflicts and national security.
Ukraine’s active stance against the condemnation and sanctions of Russian officials remains a crucial part of its foreign policy during these challenging times.
This is confirmed by its heightened focus on counter-espionage threats and security measures, requiring strengthened oversight and efforts by security and diplomatic services worldwide.
