Ukraine and Germany: Strengthening Cooperation in the Context of Anti-Corruption Reforms and European Integration
The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeiev, recently emphasized Kyiv's clear stance regarding Berlin's approach to supporting Ukraine on its path toward the European Union.
According to him, Germany has no intention of turning a blind eye to issues of corruption and the rule of law, as these principles are fundamental to European integration and crucial for making further decisions in this direction.
Makeiev highlighted that any decisions impacting Ukraine’s EU accession process must be based on shared values and standards recommended by the European Union.
Particular attention in this discussion is given to the new law №12414, adopted last week, which places NABU and SAP under the authority of the General Prosecutor.
The ambassador stressed that anti-corruption policies and the rule of law are non-negotiable parts of Ukraine’s European choice.
Regarding further steps toward European integration, the diplomat expressed optimism about the renewal of Ukraine-Germany intergovernmental consultations, established following agreements between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin.
This initiative aims to deepen cooperation and exchange ideas regarding reforms, especially in combating corruption and processes of European integration.
The ambassador also commented on Merz’s recent statement about a possible postponement of Ukraine’s accession to the EU within the multi-year financial framework until 2034.
Makeiev assured that Ukraine will clarify and discuss all details soon after returning to Berlin from Kyiv.
He emphasized that the German government remains committed to Ukraine’s right to join the EU and that a policy based on achievements remains a priority for Berlin.
Overall, the diplomat assured that Ukraine’s path to the EU continues to receive strong support and active coordination from Germany, which has taken a leadership role in this process.
At the same time, he stressed Germany’s openness and willingness to cooperate with other European partners to overcome existing obstacles and achieve the common goal — Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.
