In a recent phone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, participants highlighted the critical importance of quickly passing the bill that ensures the independence of national anti-corruption agencies.
Zelensky stated that this legislative initiative must be approved by next week to demonstrate Ukraine's commitment to strengthening its anti-corruption infrastructure and further European Union integration. As reported by 'European Truth' citing Zelensky's post on the social network 'X', the discussion covered not only the key bill but also Ukraine’s European strategic orientation, further sanctions against Russia, and ongoing efforts to reform the anti-corruption system. Zelensky emphasized that the government and Verkhovna Rada need to act swiftly to pass this document, as its adoption is crucial for the effective functioning of anti-corruption bodies. He also assured that Ukraine continues to work on reforms necessary for securing financial assistance under the Ukraine Facility mechanism and for opening new avenues for rapid European integration.
According to his words, work on opening the first EU membership negotiation clusters is ongoing and requires prompt and coordinated efforts. Recall that on July 25, Verkhovna Rada Chair Ruslan Stefanchuk announced that the presidential bill aimed at reforming the independence of NABU and SAP would be considered on July 31.
Meanwhile, Zelensky stressed that laws tying NABU and SAP to the Prosecutor General complicate Ukraine’s further integration into the EU, urging urgent and independent legislative action.
