Zelensky and von der Leyen Agree on Joint Anti-Corruption and Sanctions Measures Against Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, continuing his diplomatic efforts, held a significant discussion with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The conversation focused on strategic cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union, emphasizing steps to strengthen anti-corruption reforms and accelerate Ukraine’s integration into the EU.
Both leaders discussed the importance of improving legislation to ensure the independence and effectiveness of anti-corruption agencies, as well as the need for urgent adoption of relevant bills to facilitate Ukraine’s progress.
A major part of the dialogue revolved around tightening sanctions on Russia.
Zelensky provided an update on Ukraine's progress in structural reforms required for securing financial assistance through the Ukraine Facility program.
This includes the signing of laws related to the reform of the State Bureau of Investigations and factoring mechanisms.
The European Commission President praised Ukraine’s advancements and supported the continued fulfillment of program conditions.
Furthermore, the leaders discussed the new 18th EU sanctions package against Russia, aimed at increasing economic pressure on Moscow.
Zelensky expressed gratitude for the decision to lower crude oil price caps and confirmed that Ukraine has already implemented all 18 sanctions packages.
Additionally, both sides agreed to intensify cooperation to expedite the opening of the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to work at a rapid pace toward this goal.
However, concerns were also raised regarding any attempts to undermine the independence of NABU and SAP, as such actions could jeopardize Ukraine’s European Union support, crucial for ongoing reforms and anti-corruption efforts.
