Vucic Affirms Serbia’s Neutral Stance in Sanctions Context Regarding Russia

Chas Pravdy - 27 July 2025 17:56

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has reaffirmed his country's commitment to maintaining a position of independence and neutrality amidst international pressures, explicitly stating that Belgrade will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation.
This declaration serves as a clear message amid recent political debates and conflicting signals regarding possible restrictive measures taken by various European nations against Moscow and its allies, including Serbia. Vucic emphasized that Serbia continues to adhere to policies rooted in sovereignty and autonomy.
Responding to speculations about future sanctions, he underscored that Serbia has no intentions to alter its stance, despite external pressures or expectations.
The president pointed out that this policy has faced criticism from Western partners and has evoked mixed reactions on the Eastern front. He also addressed statements made by the Minister for European Integration, Nemanja Starovic, who recently mentioned the possibility of sanctions should Serbia join the EU.
Vucic remarked that Starovic spoke emotionally and imprudently and stated his desire to maintain a balanced approach amid external influences. Despite political changes, with two-thirds of government officials remaining in their posts, Serbia continues to pursue a stable and consistent foreign policy.
Vucic maintained that his country's ongoing approach has proven effective and remains a foundation for regional stability. Finally, he reaffirmed Serbia's unwavering stance on neutrality and independence, while expressing humanitarian support for Ukraine — including readiness to assist in rebuilding towns and regions affected by conflict, demonstrating solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
