Turkey announces significant breakthrough in negotiations on Ukraine conflict resolution

Chas Pravdy - 26 July 2025 06:01

In recent diplomatic developments aimed at stabilizing the situation in Ukraine, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made a major announcement regarding substantial progress in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He stated that during a recent meeting in Istanbul, representatives of both countries agreed to hold a summit of leaders on Turkish territory. This development marks a significant step toward finding a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis, especially since previous talks were conducted at delegation level. Fidan emphasized that the ongoing war has serious regional and global consequences and called on the international community to intensify efforts toward its end. During the latest round of talks in Istanbul, discussions focused on conditions under which leaders could meet, and there was a broad effort by delegations to reach a compromise. According to him, current negotiations suggest a high likelihood of reaching a temporary resolution, as both sides seek to maximize their negotiating advantage without revealing all their cards. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated he would work toward organizing a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Background: the conflict has seen three rounds of talks in Istanbul, aimed at peaceful settlement. The first negotiations occurred in May, the second in June. Ukrainian diplomats have actively proposed a high-level meeting involving Erdoğan or even former US President Donald Trump. Turkey supports such an initiative, and all parties appear committed to resolving the crisis through dialogue and compromises.
