Lithuanian Foreign Minister Urges Ukraine to Safeguard Independence of Anti-Corruption Bodies
Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Kęstutis Skvernelis, has strongly urged Ukrainian authorities not to backtrack on their anti-corruption efforts and to uphold the principles of independence for anti-corruption institutions.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he expressed concern over the Ukrainian Parliament's decision that restricts the activities of NABU and SAP, describing it as a serious mistake that could undermine the progress Ukraine has achieved in combating corruption.
The Lithuanian minister emphasized that independence of anti-corruption agencies is not merely a procedural matter but a vital principle essential for effective anti-corruption measures.
He highlighted that Lithuania has spent decades fighting corruption and continues to strive for success, supporting Ukraine in maintaining the autonomy of its anti-corruption bodies.
"For this fight, you need politicians willing to embrace change, honest prosecutors with backbone, and independent, strong, and specialized anti-corruption institutions," Skvernelis added.
He pointed out that his country has accumulated valuable experience in this field and urged Ukraine not to take steps that could halt or regress the ongoing reforms.
Meanwhile, the issue of anti-corruption measures remains one of the most pressing and complicated challenges facing Kyiv.
International support and calls for independence of anti-corruption agencies are widely endorsed globally.
Additionally, amid these developments, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed their desire to discuss with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky measures to strengthen anti-corruption efforts.
Zelensky responded by promising to submit a bill ensuring the independence of anti-corruption bodies, a move welcomed by G7 ambassadors and the international community.
All these events underscore the critical importance of maintaining the independence of anti-corruption agencies for Ukraine's stability and European integration pathways.
