EU Welcomes Ukraine’s Steps Toward Reforming Anti-Corruption Bodies Amid Internal Political Tensions

Chas Pravdy - 24 July 2025 16:47

The European Union has expressed its support and recognition of Ukraine’s persistent efforts to combat corruption, particularly in light of recent initiatives aimed at strengthening the independence of anti-corruption agencies like NABU and SAP.
In the latest statements, the European Commission leadership emphasized that they are closely monitoring Ukraine’s progress and are committed to ensuring that the Ukrainian government considers all feedback and recommendations, especially concerning potential risks to the autonomy of these institutions.
Moreover, the EU underscores that fighting corruption remains a key requirement for Ukraine’s deeper integration into the European Union.
At the same time, Brussels refrains from publicly commenting on the telephone conversations between the European Commission’s head and the Ukrainian president, indicating the delicacy of the situation.
Experts warn of serious risks to Ukraine’s ongoing international funding and reputation if measures to weaken the independence of NABU and SAP are implemented.
The EU urges Kyiv to consider its legitimate concerns and develop a balanced approach that guarantees reforms without compromising institutional independence.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky confirmed that the draft law aimed at reinforcing the independence of anti-corruption bodies has been agreed upon and is considered balanced by the government; the bill is expected to be submitted to Parliament shortly.
Analysts highlight heightened internal political tensions, including accusations from law enforcement and political groups that seek to control independent anti-corruption agencies, raising fears about a possible slide toward authoritarian governance.
