Controversial Congresswoman Spreads Disinformation About Protests in Kyiv and Legislation №12414
Amid escalating social tensions in Ukraine and recent legislative initiatives that sparked widespread protests and debates, American Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene disseminated false information by falsely attributing the causes of mass protests in Kyiv to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's alleged refusal to negotiate peace with Russia. She claims that the protests erupted because Zelensky is allegedly a dictator who refuses to sign peace agreements and end the ongoing war, completely ignoring the underlying issues. According to her, the protests are supposedly a response to legislative changes, especially Law №12414, which significantly increases the dependence of NABU and SAPO on the Prosecutor General's Office. In reality, the root causes of the protests in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities are linked to the adoption and signing of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, which undermine the independence of anti-corruption bodies and give the Prosecutor General more control. As of the morning of July 24, Greene’s post has accumulated over 78,000 likes and about 8,000 comments, many of which express disagreement and frustration with her misinformation. Despite this, Greene has not corrected her false claims. This situation continues to fuel misinformation globally and stirs political tension surrounding Ukraine, especially in light of ongoing protests and internal reforms. It is crucial to emphasize that the primary motivation behind the protests is the Ukrainian people's desire to defend their independence and fight corruption, not the political propaganda spread from abroad.
