Zelensky Silent on Controversial Changes in Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Bodies and Mass Protests

Chas Pravdy - 23 July 2025 02:43

During the night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky chose silence regarding critical developments in the country, particularly the signing of a new law that significantly alters the status of independent anti-corruption agencies—NABU and SAP.
The lack of an official comment from Zelensky has surprised the public and experts alike, as expectations were high for clear leadership actions following the law's adoption by the Parliament.
Instead, in his midnight address on July 22, the president did not mention this highly contentious document, focusing instead on topics such as combating Russian influence, stabilizing internal affairs, and supporting anti-corruption efforts.
It is known that during discussions with NABU, SAP directors, the Prosecutor General, and the Security Service of Ukraine, Zelensky emphasized the importance of functioning anti-corruption infrastructure but also stressed the need to purge foreign and Russian influences from the system.
The main message revolves around maintaining independence and increasing public trust in fair justice; however, the law in question, No.
12414, which effectively stripped these agencies of their independence, triggered mass protests across the country.
Currently, the official position of the Office of the President regarding this controversial law remains absent, as the population has taken to the streets urging veto.
Zelensky's lack of response has drawn criticism from civil activists and politicians, who urged the head of state to act to preserve the independence of anti-corruption institutions.
Law enforcement authorities warned they would take action against protesters gathered near the presidential administration, especially after the imposition of curfew.
Meanwhile, Zelensky's last message on July 22 highlighted his role in awarding certificates of Hero of Ukraine to those who fought and defended the country from aggression.
As discontent grows across Ukrainian cities, the international community is also watching, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Ukraine’s judicial and anti-corruption independence.
