Republicans propose renaming Kennedy Center Opera House in honor of Melania Trump
In Washington, D.C., a new political debate has emerged over the fate of one of the most prominent cultural landmarks — the Kennedy Center Opera House.
The proposal, put forward by Republican members of the House of Representatives, aims to rename this iconic venue as the "First Lady Melania Trump Opera Theater." The initiative received support from 33 members of the House Appropriations Committee out of 58, with 25 opposing.
The motion is part of a broader budget package, sparking widespread political discussion and controversy.
The idea to honor Melania Trump with such recognition gained momentum a few months after Donald Trump, then serving as President, took an unprecedented step by appointing himself chairman of the Kennedy Center board, criticizing the institution for its “overly progressive” and politicized stance.
Historically, Donald and Melania Trump had skipped the annual Kennedy Center Honors, a prestigious event celebrating outstanding contributions to culture and arts; however, recently they appeared at a performance of "Les Misérables" at the same venue.
Neither the Kennedy Center nor Melania Trump’s office have officially commented on the possible renaming.
The legislation, if approved, would designate the venue as the “Melania Trump First Lady Opera Theater,” paying tribute to her role.
The theater, which seats over 2,300 spectators, is one of the largest and most active cultural venues within the Kennedy Center, regularly hosting top-tier performances from leading ballet and opera companies.
The proposal remains in early stages, and it is unclear when a full House vote might take place.
This move highlights ongoing political debates over the legacy of former presidents and their families, with cultural spaces increasingly becoming focal points for political statements and tribute.
