Prosecutor General Kravchenko Ensures: Chernychov Case Remains Under Control of Independent Bodies and Is Not Politically Influenced

Chas Pravdy - 23 July 2025 07:42

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko publicly assured the public that the case of former Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Unity Oleksiy Chernychov will remain under the jurisdiction of trusted and independent anti-corruption agencies.
Despite the adoption of controversial legislation, which complicates the work of NABU and SAP, the respective authorities will have full access to all materials and continue their investigations without interference.
Kravchenko emphasized that he has no intention of taking over this case personally or asserting control over it, and assured that the investigation and subsequent court proceedings will stay within the competence of the designated agencies.
At the same time, the head of the Prosecutor's Office expressed his personal willingness to be present in court during key hearings, underscoring the importance of transparency in high-profile cases.
Although the Verkhovna Rada passed a law with 263 votes that effectively abolishes the independence of NABU and SAP, President Zelensky has already signed it, and it came into force on July 23.
The new regulations grant the Head of the Prosecutor General's Office unrestricted access to all criminal cases, allowing him to seize case materials, transfer cases to other investigators, and make decisions to close or continue investigations against top officials.
Meanwhile, in September, parliament is considering additional measures to supervise these anti-corruption agencies.
In June, NABU announced suspicion against Chernychov for abuse of power and illicit enrichment, which marked the culmination of a long investigation initiated after his overseas trip.
According to investigations, he is the sixth suspect involved in a large-scale corruption scheme affecting the Ministry of Regional Development and regional administrations.
Searches were conducted in the residences and offices of the accused, and restrictions such as bail and mandatory appearance in court remain in effect.
During the court session, Chernychov confirmed he would stay in Ukraine and cooperate with investigators, a move that has caused wide public discussion.
Overall, the situation surrounding this case highlights ongoing struggles between oligarchic groups and the justice system amid Ukraine’s ongoing crisis.
