Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Agencies Receive Public Support Amid Threats to Independence

Chas Pravdy - 22 July 2025 23:45

Amid political tensions and significant reforms in Ukraine, the struggle to preserve the independence of anti-corruption bodies such as NABU and SAP is becoming increasingly crucial for the country's future.
On July 22, mass protests took place in the capital and various cities across Ukraine, with participants expressing their support for these institutions at a time when their independence is under threat.
Responding to these events, the leadership of NABU and SAP issued official statements on social media, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all Ukrainians for their active support.
These agencies emphasized that such backing signals trust in their work and exemplifies civic unity in combating corruption.
Special attention was given to the youth, whose resolute stance and confidence in defending judicial independence appear especially striking, as this is seen as the foundation of Ukraine's future.
Meanwhile, government officials and justice ministry representatives highlight that these protests sent an important message as authorities currently seek to amend legislation related to anti-corruption agencies.
The bill №12414, signed into law by President Zelensky on July 22, effectively undermines the independence of NABU and SAP, placing the situation back into a political game and reducing Ukraine's credibility in the eyes of the international community.
European officials expressed concern over these developments, warning that their outcome could influence future EU integration assessments scheduled for late October.
Experts warn that the potential dismantling of these independent agencies might have long-term repercussions for anti-corruption efforts and national stability.
Despite this crisis, Ukrainian citizens, politicians, and activists united to defend democratic values and the rule of law, recognizing that every act of support is a vital step toward transforming Ukraine into a strong and independent nation.
