EU Responds to Crisis with NABU and SAP: Urging Ukraine to Protect Anti-Corruption Independence

Chas Pravdy - 22 July 2025 14:32

Amid recent developments concerning Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions, NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), the European Union has voiced its concerns and emphasized the critical importance of maintaining the independence of these bodies for the country’s reform agenda.
According to EU Commissioner spokesperson Guillaume Mersier, these agencies play a pivotal role in Ukraine’s ongoing reforms and must operate independently to effectively combat corruption and restore public trust.
The EU provides significant financial aid to Ukraine, conditioned on tangible progress in transparency, judicial reform, and democratic governance.
Ukrainian institutions are now under pressure to demonstrate their capacity to fight corruption robustly and to strengthen institutional resilience.
This support remains essential because accession to the EU demands a strong civil society and a solid legal system.
Currently, Ukraine faces complex challenges, including searches and investigations targeting NABU personnel, which have drawn international concern.
Several G7 embassies have expressed their worries about the security measures taken against anti-corruption agencies.
These investigative activities threaten not only the independence of NABU but also the overall rule of law in Ukraine.
Demonstrating shared values in the fight against corruption and protecting democratic principles is fundamental to maintaining strategic partnership with the EU and progressing toward European standards of governance and development.
The situation underscores the importance of safeguarding anti-corruption efforts and ensuring that Ukraine continues its journey toward EU integration with respect for democratic norms and judicial independence.
