Zelensky Reveals First Countries for Potential Multinational Citizenship Agreements

Chas Pravdy - 21 July 2025 18:22

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced significant developments regarding the expansion of opportunities for Ukrainians to acquire multiple citizenships.
In a statement, he outlined the first countries with which Ukraine plans to establish procedures allowing citizens to hold dual or multiple nationalities.
This move is a logical continuation of the law recently adopted in Ukraine aimed at maintaining strong bonds between Ukrainians abroad and their homeland.
Zelensky explained that the process of opening procedures for multiple citizenship will initially focus on countries with the largest Ukrainian communities.
Among these, he named Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Baltic states.
The President emphasized that this list is not final and that the definitive decision will be made after consultations with the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada.
Additionally, he mentioned that Canada and other countries with significant Ukrainian populations and strong support for Ukraine will also be considered.
The adoption of the law on multiple citizenships was long discussed even before the full-scale military invasion in 2022 and gained renewed relevance afterward.
The legislation, proposed by Zelensky in early 2024 and signed into law by July, aims to simplify processes for Ukrainian citizens wishing to preserve ties with their homeland by obtaining citizenship of other countries.
This development opens new avenues for Ukrainians overseas and strengthens international relations.
More details about the law and its implications can be found in a video by 'EuroRight' and an in-depth article by editor Serhiy Sydorenko, analyzing the legal aspects and significance of the new model of citizenship.
