Zelensky Announces Initiatives to Grant Multiple Citizenship to Ukrainians Abroad
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has announced a significant step towards strengthening the rights of Ukrainians living outside the country.
He stated that in the near future, mechanisms will be launched to implement double or multiple citizenship for Ukrainians residing in various countries around the world.
This move is a logical continuation of the law passed earlier, which allows Ukrainians to hold Ukrainian citizenship simultaneously with citizenship of other states without losing their Ukrainian identity.
The head of state emphasized that this process will be gradually implemented and will depend on cooperation with governments of countries where a large number of Ukrainians live.
The initial focus will be on Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, and the Baltic countries, which are priority partners for this initiative.
The official decision regarding specific countries will be made after consultations with Prime Minister Julia Sviridenko, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada.
In the future, the list of potential partner countries may expand, considering the geographic distribution of the Ukrainian diaspora and the level of support for Ukraine worldwide.
Zelensky highlighted the importance of considering these countries’ attitudes towards Ukrainian citizens and their support for the Ukrainian state.
The law on multiple citizenship, signed by the president on July 15, opens new opportunities for millions of Ukrainians to maintain cultural and legal ties with Ukraine, regardless of where they are living.
This law enables Ukrainians to retain their citizenship while acquiring citizenship of other countries, thereby strengthening their connection to their homeland and fostering the preservation of Ukrainian identity internationally.
