Boris Johnson Calls for Renewed International Support for Ukraine Amid British Apathy
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson publicly expressed his concern over the declining attention that British society pays to the situation in Ukraine. During a meeting with Ukrainian veterans at the Ukrainian embassy in London, he emphasized that supporting Kyiv remains a personal priority for him, regardless of domestic political transformations in the UK. Johnson noted that interest in Ukraine has significantly diminished, which deeply disheartens him. At the same time, he acknowledged that while the UK plays a crucial role in supporting Kyiv, London no longer holds the leading position it once did on the global stage. He also remarked that internal political challenges are diverting government attention, but urged not to miss the opportunity to strengthen the country’s international influence, emphasizing that there is still time for active action. Although Johnson currently has no plans to re-enter politics, he affirmed his intention to continue actively supporting Ukraine. At an event organized by the Ukrainian energy company DTEK, Johnson was warmly welcomed by Ukrainian military personnel, including those who have experienced captivity and torture. In his speech, he called on European countries to transfer approximately $300 billion in frozen Russian assets to Ukraine as an advance payment for future reparations. Johnson noted that this idea is also supported by former US President Donald Trump, although some circles express concern about how international investors might react. Additionally, it was reported that the UK might join Germany in acquiring Patriot missile defense systems or alternatively purchase other weapons and ammunition from the US. Both options are currently being seriously considered by the government.
