Verkhovna Rada Preparing Major Appeal to U.S. Congress for Support Against Russia and Sanctions
In December 2023, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada is taking significant steps to bolster international support in its fight against Russian aggression and to advance sanctions against Moscow. This was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk during a press briefing. The parliament is drafting an extensive appeal to the U.S. Congress aimed at accelerating aid to Ukraine, including additional financial assistance, the transfer of modern military equipment such as F-16 fighter jets, and efforts to bring Ukrainian children back home who have fallen into the war’s trap. Stefanchuk emphasized that this document represents an important move to strengthen Ukraine's international backing. He expressed hope that in the coming days, the appeal will be officially registered and quickly approved by legislators. Additionally, he mentioned a meeting with U.S. Special Representative Keith Kellogg in Kyiv, although he chose not to disclose the details of their discussion. Stefanchuk highlighted the anticipation of a robust sanctions package from the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Another key issue under discussion involves potentially allowing men aged 18 to 24 to travel abroad, which is currently under review. Overall, these political initiatives reflect Ukraine’s intense diplomatic efforts and its ongoing pursuit of strengthening defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict.
