Merz sharply criticizes the European Union: bureaucracy, sluggishness, and strategic failures
In an unexpected and sharp statement, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of the European Union, describing it as “too bureaucratic,” “too slow,” and even “overregulated.” These words were spoken during a press conference attended by over 200 journalists and served as a serious signal for Brussels to reconsider its policies and seek more effective ways to respond to contemporary challenges. Merz emphasized the need for a drastic shift in focus: instead of endless bureaucratic procedures, decision-making should be accelerated, and regulatory frameworks adjusted to allow greater flexibility. Particular criticism was directed at the EU’s policy towards Ukraine, which Merz described as “boring,” emphasizing the need to intensify efforts to support the country in its fight and integration process. The politician stressed that both the EU and Germany must return to their core goals, focusing on solving critical global and regional issues such as migration, energy security, and political stability. He also voiced doubts about the pace of Ukraine’s integration into the EU, suggesting that this process could take much longer than Brussels currently anticipates. Merz called on European leaders to be more decisive and prompt so that the EU can more effectively respond to challenges and maintain its influence on the global stage.
