Moldova reduces gas transit costs to Ukraine, bolstering regional energy security

Chas Pravdy - 26 October 2025 00:24

Moldova has officially announced a significant reduction in transit tariffs for natural gas passing through its territory to Ukraine.

The National Energy Regulatory Agency of Moldova (ANRE) approved a decision aimed at strengthening the region’s energy stability by ensuring steady gas supplies to Ukraine and beyond.

This initiative involves transmission operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, reflecting a strategic move towards diversifying routes and decreasing dependence on single energy sources.

The changes include the optimization and extension of the ‘Route 1’ pipeline via the Trans-Balkan pipeline, which will remain operational for an additional six months until April 2026.

Furthermore, the company ‘Vestmoldtransgaz’ will benefit from a 50% discount on transit tariffs at the connection points of Cahulani and Hrebnik, with the Romanian operator ‘Transgaz’ implementing similar reductions.

These measures significantly enhance transit capacities, helping to reduce transportation costs and improve energy security across the region.

Additionally, the United States plans to supply liquefied natural gas to Ukraine, further diversifying energy sources.

On October 23, the Ukrainian government allocated 8.4 billion hryvnias from the reserve fund to ensure an uninterrupted heating season for 2025/2026, supporting domestic heating needs and safeguarding energy stability during winter.
