Kyiv Strengthens Energy Independence: Additional Backup Power Sources for Urban Infrastructure
In the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, significant measures have been taken to enhance the city’s energy security.
According to officials from the Kyiv City State Administration, the number of backup power sources has increased substantially.
Currently, over 300 units of specialized equipment have been prepared to ensure uninterrupted power supply to city systems.
This includes water supply and drainage, as well as heating.
The total capacity of these backup sources exceeds 50 megawatts.
About 100 megawatts of this capacity are designated for operating essential water systems, with gas piston units being installed at critical city facilities.
Additionally, the city has deployed 51 mobile boiler units that will be connected to hospitals and other vital institutions to provide them with heating during emergencies.
Kyiv also operates a network of autonomous kiosks – more than 150 water distribution points equipped with their own backup power sources with a combined capacity of nearly 1 MW.
Deputy Head of Kyiv City State Administration Petro Panteleev stated that thanks to government co-financing programs and energy resilience initiatives, over a thousand residential buildings are now equipped with backup power supplies, including generators, batteries, and inverters.
Furthermore, 70 solar power stations are functioning within residential complexes, significantly contributing to the city’s energy independence.
