India Cuts Russian Oil Imports by 50% Following U.S. Pressure
According to Reuters, citing a White House official, India is swiftly reducing its imports of Russian oil, cutting them by 50% in response to pressure from the United States.
This move is the result of extensive trade negotiations between the two countries, which have been described as productive, leading Indian refineries to already begin decreasing their purchases of Russian crude.
The official provided no additional details regarding the process or specific volumes of reduction.
It is known that for several months, the U.S.
has been exerting diplomatic pressure on India to persuade it to cease buying oil from Russia.
Sources indicate that some Indian refineries are preparing to significantly cut or halt imports altogether, anticipating further reductions as U.S.
diplomatic efforts intensify.
On Wednesday, U.S.
President Donald Trump stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him that India would stop purchasing Russian oil.
In response, Indian authorities emphasized that the country’s priority is to protect domestic consumer interests and diversify energy sources to ensure energy independence.
