Germany Experiences a Tripling of Employed Ukrainians: A Significant Breakthrough in the Labor Market

Chas Pravdy - 15 October 2025 16:31

Over the past two years, the number of Ukrainians employed in Germany has increased threefold.

According to data from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) based in Nuremberg, the share of Ukrainian workers among the total workforce has grown from 0.2% to 0.6%.

Currently, about 242,000 Ukrainians are employed there, with 165,000 working in sectors that contribute to social insurance.

This substantial growth is mainly concentrated in small and medium-sized enterprises, which employ between 10 and 249 people.

It is noteworthy that in 2022, Ukrainians accounted for only 0.2% of Germany’s labor force.

The policy of German authorities, especially Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, plays a vital role — he calls for creating additional incentives to encourage employment.

He advocates for the abolition of social benefits like ‘Bürgergeld’ for Ukrainian refugees, arguing that such financial support might discourage active participation in the labor market.

Söder believes that state aid acts as a barrier preventing Ukrainians from seeking employment in Germany.
