Rising Prices for Greenhouse Tomatoes in Ukraine: Causes, Trends, and Outlook

In Ukraine, the prices for greenhouse-grown tomatoes have been steadily increasing for the second consecutive week, driven by a complex interplay of market factors.

Experts from the EastFruit project indicate that this upward trend primarily stems from a significant reduction in the production and supply volumes of these vegetables from greenhouse facilities.

This decline is linked to seasonal fluctuations and limited production capacities, resulting in fewer available tomatoes in the market.

An additional contributor to the price surge is the decreased availability of open-field tomatoes, which are also seasonal.

Since the beginning of last week, the average price for greenhouse tomatoes has increased by approximately 14%, signaling heightened demand among consumers.

As of September 12, these products were being sold at prices ranging from 35 to 55 hryvnias per kilogram (equivalent to 0.85-1.33 USD), depending on quality, size, and batch volumes.

Producers emphasize that increasing demand allows them to raise wholesale and retail prices.

Retail chains and wholesale companies are showing growing interest in these vegetables, further supporting price growth.

Moreover, the rise in ground-grown tomato prices in the market reinforces the trend.

Despite these increases, the prices for greenhouse tomatoes remain roughly 30% lower than they were at the beginning of September 2024, maintaining relative affordability for Ukrainian consumers and reflecting typical seasonal market fluctuations.
