The History of Halloween Celebrations in Ukraine: Traditions and Modern Trends
Halloween has deep historical roots tracing back to Celtic festivals like Samhain, which dates to the 9th century.
Originally, it marked the end of the harvest season, symbolizing the transition from summer to winter.
Over the centuries, its rituals and symbols evolved under Christian influence, leading to the familiar customs of wearing masks, lighting bonfires, and asking for treats.
In Ukraine, especially in the western regions, traditional customs such as All Souls’ Day or All Saints’ Day, which involve visiting cemeteries and memorial dinners, still persist, but they are not directly connected to Halloween’s modern festivities.
Today, Halloween has become part of global culture, enjoyed by children and youth alike.
Ukrainians are encouraged to accept it as a cultural phenomenon that has integrated into their society, complementing existing traditions rather than replacing them.
