Memorial Day of Saint Demetrius: Traditions and Historical Significance
On October 26th, Ukraine observes a significant religious and cultural holiday — the Memorial Day of Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica, commonly known as Dimitri’s day.
This special day has deep historical and spiritual roots connected to Orthodox Christian traditions and folk customs preserved over centuries.

Historically, the day marked the end of the harvest season, with women baking pancakes—symbolizing the conclusion of grain gathering.
According to tradition, the first pancake was given to the oldest family member or left on the windowsill if that person had passed away.
