Measles Vaccination: Why Protection Is Essential and the Consequences of Skipping Shots

Chas Pravdy - 14 September 2025 01:27

During the first seven months of 2023, Ukraine recorded a concerning total of 1,377 measles cases, with children under 17 years old accounting for more than 1,000 of those infections.

This alarming statistic highlights the critical importance of vaccination, as measles remains one of the world’s most contagious and dangerous infectious diseases.According to official data from Ukraine’s Ministry of Health, prevention of measles primarily involves two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.

The first dose is administered at 12 months of age, and the second at 6 years old, according to the national immunization schedule.

However, starting January 1, 2026, this schedule will be adjusted — the second dose will be given earlier, at 4 years old.It is vital to emphasize that missing or delaying even one vaccination increases the risk for children and the entire community.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases — up to 90% of unvaccinated individuals exposed to an infected person may contract the virus.

The infection can spread anywhere—from public transport and stores to schools and shelters—making outbreaks rapid and widespread.Complications from measles can be severe, including pneumonia, otitis, encephalitis, and in some cases, leading to disabilities or death.

Additionally, those who have had measles face immune amnesia, meaning their immune system becomes less effective against other infections, leaving them more vulnerable.Vaccination remains the most reliable method of protection against measles.

There is no specific treatment for the disease, so prevention is crucial.

The Ministry of Health urges those who missed their scheduled vaccinations to consult a healthcare provider immediately for an individual vaccination plan.Recently, in Chernivtsi region, the first death linked to measles complications was recorded in 2025, reinforcing the importance of timely immunization.

Remember: vaccination is your best defense against this disease, and it safeguards your health and that of your loved ones.

Always consult with your healthcare provider and do not postpone vaccination — your health is in your hands.
