Israel Acknowledges Link Between War and Rising Suicide Rates Among Soldiers

Chas Pravdy - 03 August 2025 16:49

In recent times, Israeli authorities and military experts have officially recognized that ongoing combat operations and the psychological strain associated with prolonged deployments in conflict zones have led to a significant increase in suicides among members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

According to an internal investigation by the military, published by Israel’s public broadcaster KAN, most of these tragic incidents are directly linked to traumatic combat experiences, the loss of comrades, and the inability to cope with the psychological wounds inflicted by war.

Following the release of these findings, the army’s press service did not deny the conclusions, emphasizing that each case is thoroughly examined and analyzed.A senior military official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated: “Most suicides among our soldiers are the result of the harsh realities of modern warfare.

War leaves deep scars and has severe psychological consequences.” Official data show that the military is conducting detailed reviews of each case, including analysis of note-leaving, interviews with relatives and friends of the deceased.

Special attention is given to preventive measures, with the army expanding its corps of mental health professionals working directly within units; their numbers increased by 200 for conscripts and by 600 for reservists.

Every suicide case is reviewed by a colonel-level officer, supported by an investigation from military police.

Statistics for the first half of 2025 indicate 16 Israeli military personnel have taken their own lives, including seven reservists.

In July alone, four reservists committed suicide — two during service and two after returning from reserve duty, raising concerns about the mental health support within the armed forces.
