Zelensky after meeting with Trump: strategic coalition and security guarantees discussion
Following a recent meeting with U.S.
President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continued diplomatic negotiations with key European partners, forming what is termed a ‘Decisive Coalition.’ This step is crucial in bolstering Ukraine’s international support amid ongoing war and security challenges. In his statement, Zelensky explained that the delay in making an official stance was due to the necessity of conducting phone consultations with leaders of strategic European countries and representatives of the European Union leadership.
During these conversations, he discussed security guarantees and support measures, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts.Key European leaders involved included Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and António Costa, Prime Minister of Portugal.
The discussions also featured Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, highlighting broad international consensus on supporting Ukraine.Zelensky also stressed the critical importance of security assurances, particularly the United States’ leadership in providing such guarantees.
“One of the main topics of our conversation with President Trump was security guarantees.
We are counting on U.S.
leadership,” he emphasized. In addition, discussions with European colleagues covered air defense issues and participation in the PURL program, which involves European financial support for the transfer of American weapons to Ukraine. This diplomatic activity is especially relevant ahead of Zelensky’s planned visit to the White House on October 17, which was scheduled after their two prior phone calls.
The talks are expected to focus on sensitive issues such as the potential delivery of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, a step deemed critical for strengthening its defense capabilities.
