Unlikely Obstacles on Vladimir Putin’s Path to Budapest: Challenges and International Risks

According to recent intelligence reports, Russian leader Vladimir Putin may face significant difficulties during his planned visit to Budapest, Hungary.

The journey is complicated by potential obstacles arising from the need to cross through the airspace of European countries, notably Poland, Romania, or the Baltic states.

Considering the geopolitical risks and international policies, this route could come under strict scrutiny.

Legally, under international law, Hungary—being a member of the International Criminal Court—should arrest Putin upon his landing, but it is highly probable that the country will choose not to do so, as it is currently in the process of exiting the court due to its politicization.

The ICC lacks enforcement mechanisms and depends on member states’ actions, which means Putin might be safe in Budapest.

This would mark his first significant visit to an EU country since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine.

However, the route to Budapest may not be as straightforward or safe, as crossing the airspaces of countries like Poland or the Baltic states could compel his aircraft to land.

Such risks prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to choose routes around France and Spain during his recent trip to the UN General Assembly in New York.

Previously, there were speculations about Putin traveling via Turkey and Serbia to meet Trump in Budapest, but current diplomatic considerations may complicate such plans.
