Free Rehabilitation for Veterans: Opportunities and Procedures

Since the beginning of Russia’s large-scale aggression, many brave men and women in Ukraine have volunteered to defend their homeland.
As a result, Ukraine’s military personnel and veterans are not only honored and recognized for their bravery, but they are also entitled to a range of social guarantees provided by the state, including rehabilitation programs designed to restore their physical and mental health.
One of the critical aspects of support is free rehabilitation, offered by the government to help veterans recover from injuries, surgeries, and psychological trauma.
According to official information published on the Kharkiv Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support’s Facebook page, veterans have access to a comprehensive set of rehabilitation services funded by the state and integrated into the healthcare system.
These services include medical examinations by specialists in rehabilitation medicine, the development of individual rehabilitation plans and therapy programs, neurorehabilitation, orthopedic, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and more.
Additionally, veterans can receive pain management in inpatient settings, psychological assistance, and therapy.
All these services are provided by teams of qualified healthcare professionals — including rehabilitation doctors, physical therapists, ergotherapists, speech therapists, prosthetists, and psychologists.
Importantly, rehabilitation services are entirely free and cover treatment not only following injuries and surgical interventions but also post-stroke, post-infarction recovery, and cancer treatment.
To access these services, veterans need to follow a simple process: obtain a referral from a licensed rehabilitation or physical medicine doctor for inpatient treatments or present a referral or declaration from a family doctor or another specialist for outpatient therapies.
They also need to select a rehabilitation facility by visiting the National Health Service of Ukraine website, navigating to the “E-Data” section, opening the “Analytical Dashboards,” selecting the “Agreements on Medical Services” panel, and choosing the appropriate format — either table or map.
They must specify their region and locality, then check whether the chosen facility has a contract with the NHSU for the relevant package by contacting the hotline or via the provided online tools.
This system makes it easier for veterans to find authorized clinics providing free services under state guarantees, ensuring support for those returning to everyday life after injuries or trauma.
