Estonian Defense Commander Andres Merilo made a significant statement reflecting a cautious approach to responding to Russian military provocations in the country’s airspace.

The statement was issued amid numerous violations by Russian aircraft in September, when several MiG-31 fighters entered Estonian skies, breaching international borders and raising concerns among NATO allies.

Merilo emphasized that shooting down Russian fighters in this situation would be a strategic mistake, as such a move could have disastrous consequences.

Instead, diplomatic resolution was achieved thanks to calm and thoughtful actions.

According to him, NATO’s response will depend on the specific situation, and any future actions will be decisive if necessary.

He also highlighted that Russia cynically manipulates information, blaming Estonia for spreading false reports about airspace violations.

Merilo noted that Russia has no need to provoke conflict since it fully understands that any use of force would trigger a firm NATO response.

Nonetheless, he assured that Estonian military procedures in responding to border breaches are effective and designed to avoid escalation, applying force only in extreme cases.

Overall, the commander confirmed that Estonia is prepared to defend itself with any available means, and modern weapon systems are sufficiently powerful to ensure safety without targeting ground objects.

He stated that in the worst-case scenario, NATO must be ready to act decisively, and responses will be proportionate to the level of threat.
