The recent proposal to introduce criminal penalties for promoting the ideology of Stepan Bandera has ignited extensive discussions both within Poland and across the international community.

Rauf Lekhkevich, the spokesperson for the Polish president, described the bill as a ‘Kremlin scenario,’ aimed at sabotaging the historical dialogue between the nations.

He emphasized that the actions of the UPA and Home Army cannot be equated, citing their involvement in violent crimes against Polish citizens and Jews, including collaboration with German forces during World War II.

President Andrzej Duda’s initiative to criminalize the propaganda of Bandera’s ideology has faced criticism from Ukrainian diplomats and historians, who plan to publicly express their opposition.

Kyiv argues that the bill is a tool in the fight against Russian disinformation, but critics warn it risks distorting historical facts and fueling hatred.

The debate extends to symbolic representations, with Ukrainians asserting that the red-and-black flag symbolizes national resilience rather than an extremist ideology.

The proposed legislation includes penalties of up to three years in prison for promoting totalitarian regimes or inciting ethnic hatred, raising concerns over historical accuracy and potential misuse for political purposes.
