Russian Attacks Leave Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Without Power: Risks and Consequences

On Wednesday, an emergency situation unfolded at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant due to a Russian strike on a critical energy facility in the city of Slavutych.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy reported that during the attack, sudden voltage surges led to a power outage of the plant’s main energy sources.

The most affected was the New Safe Confinement — a vital protective structure that seals off the destroyed Unit 4 and prevents the release of radioactive substances into the environment.

This situation poses a significant threat to safety, as the lack of confirmed power supply complicates the operation of safety systems and could lead to potential radiation hazards.

The ministry calls on the international community to maintain neutrality regarding the conflict and to do everything possible to prevent further energy and ecological catastrophe.
