NATO Deploys Additional Forces in the Baltic Sea Amid Rising Drone Threats

Chas Pravdy - 28 September 2025 00:26

In the tense Baltic region, NATO has announced a significant reinforcement of its military presence as part of an ongoing effort to bolster regional security.

Faced with an increase in hostile drone incursions near Danish military facilities, the alliance has decided to add new coast guard squads, anti-aircraft frigates, and advanced reconnaissance platforms to improve surveillance and rapid response capabilities.

The recent series of drone incidents, which included unidentified vehicles approaching critical infrastructure such as airports and government facilities, has heightened concerns among security experts and policymakers.

Notably, Denmark temporarily closed its main international airport in Copenhagen after observing large drones in its airspace, causing flight disruptions and tension.

Several smaller airports also suspended operations briefly during the week.

NATO responded by activating additional units under the operation known as ‘Baltic Sentry,’ aimed at protecting underwater cables and communication lines disrupted earlier this year.

Furthermore, NATO launched the ‘Eastern Sentry’ operation to strengthen eastern European borders following recent Russian drone violations of Polish airspace.

The alliance warned Russia that it might employ all necessary military and non-military measures for self-defense, especially after Russian MiG-31 fighters entered Estonian airspace for 12 minutes before being intercepted by NATO jets.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the drone threat as ‘high’ and assured that steps are being taken to enhance Germany’s air defenses, reflecting the increasing tensions in the region.
