Mass Tragedy at Indian Politician Vijaya’s Campaign Rally: Nearly Forty Deaths and Hundreds Injured

Chas Pravdy - 28 September 2025 20:37

A catastrophic incident occurred in India during a campaign rally of the well-known actor and politician Vijaya Vijay, held in the district of Karrur.

A massive crowd gathered, and during this event, a deadly stampede took place, resulting in 39 fatalities, including nine children, with more than fifty people sustaining serious injuries.

This event marks one of the most tragic moments in recent Indian political history, and the numbers are expected to rise as some of the injured remain hospitalized.

The tragedy has sparked widespread concern across the country, raising questions about the safety of mass gatherings, especially considering the frequent incidents during festivals and sporting events in India.

Vijaya, a renowned actor who recently embarked on a political career, expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and apologized for the incident.

He said he was overwhelmed with grief and deeply upset by the tragedy.

The government pledged to provide compensation of one million rupees (approximately 11,280 USD) to the families of the deceased and promised an impartial investigation into the causes of the tragedy.

Local media highlight that such tragedies are not uncommon in India — several incidents of crowd crushes have occurred in the past, often during major festivals or sporting events, raising concerns about public safety during large-scale gatherings.

Moreover, this tragedy sheds light not only on safety issues but also on the increasing use of modern technologies in electoral processes — alongside traditional methods, politicians now frequently employ innovative tools such as deepfakes, bot attacks, and personalized messaging to influence voters, which negatively affects the integrity and transparency of elections in the country.
