Lavrov declares that returning Ukraine to 2022 borders is a political illusion

Chas Pravdy - 27 September 2025 21:30

Following a statement by former U.S.

President Donald Trump, who expressed that Ukraine, supported by the European Union, has the opportunity to reclaim all its occupied territories and perhaps even advance further, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a strong declaration.

He emphasized that any attempts to restore Ukraine’s borders to the 2022 lines are merely an illusion and a sign of political blindness.

According to Lavrov, this idea is outdated, and no one should rely on it.

The Russian diplomat added that Russia has been defending its interests and territorial integrity for years, accusing Ukraine of violations and territorial seizures since 2014.

He pointed out that Kyiv ignored international agreements and acted against Russia’s interests, casting doubt on the possibility of a swift resolution based on returning to old borders.

Lavrov also stressed the importance of security guarantees for Russia and the rights of Russian citizens residing in Ukraine, and highlighted Moscow’s interest in continuing dialogue with the West, particularly the U.S., to find ways to resolve the conflict.

He announced upcoming consultations with the U.S., planned for this autumn, which could help reduce tensions and foster compromise.

Prior to this, on September 23, after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S.

President Donald Trump unexpectedly stated that Ukraine, with EU support, could return its occupied territories and even go beyond — a comment that has sparked widespread discussion and added new tension to the ongoing Ukraine crisis.
