EU Prepares New Sanctions Against Russia: Slovakia Expresses Caution in Decision-Making Process

Chas Pravdy - 27 September 2025 04:43

The European Union, amid active preparations for the new sanctions package against the Russian Federation, faces unexpected resistance from one of its member states—Slovakia.

During the EU ambassadors’ meeting held on September 26, Slovakia voiced opposition to the rapid approval of the 19th sanctions package, raising concerns among other member countries.

Although the decision was not officially blocked, Slovakia expressed a cautious stance, emphasizing the need to consider energy and transport issues within the scope of the sanctions.According to information provided by ‘Suspilne’ and diplomatic sources, Bratislava has not halted the process of finalizing the sanctions; however, it was the first to raise objections regarding their approval.

One diplomat explained that Slovakia’s position was not aimed at a complete blockage but served as a signal for further discussions and compromises.Furthermore, some countries, including Hungary, may have additional interests related to energy and transportation sectors.

There is speculation that economic pressure or political maneuvers could be involved, complicating the consensus process.

Other participants emphasized that the agreement on the full sanctions package is ongoing and closely monitored, as many member states are expressing their remarks and suggestions.Recall that on September 19, the European Commission officially presented the 19th sanctions package against Russia, which includes significant restrictions in the energy, financial, and military technology sectors.

The proposal involves a ban on transactions for companies like ‘Rosneft’ and ‘Gazpromneft’, as well as asset freezes for several enterprises.

However, countries like Slovakia and Hungary remain recipients of Russian oil via the ‘Druzhba’ pipeline, complicating the full implementation of sanctions.Discussions surrounding the new restrictions are ongoing, and it is expected that member states will reach a consensus soon, despite individual objections and diplomatic negotiations.
