Doubts on Ukraine’s EU Accession amid Diplomatic Row Between Hungary and Ukraine
Recent developments in diplomatic circles have brought to light increased tensions between Ukraine and Hungary.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó expressed doubts about Ukraine’s further integration into the European Union, citing a sharp response to the visa ban imposed on three Hungarian military officials.
This move was reciprocated by Ukraine, which banned the entry of several Hungarian representatives, further escalating the diplomatic conflict.
Szijjártó, via his social media account on X (formerly Twitter), accused Ukraine of conducting an anti-Hungarian policy for over a decade, highlighting issues such as the deprivation of rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia, violent incidents involving Hungarians, and attacks on critical infrastructure vital for Hungary’s energy security. He questioned whether Ukraine’s behavior warrants support for its EU aspirations.
“Do they really expect us to support their EU accession while they take such actions? It’s hard to believe,” Szijjártó stated.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha responded by imposing a mirror ban on three Hungarian officials, calling the measure unjustified and harmful to regional stability.
The diplomatic standoff underscores the fragility of bilateral relations and raises concerns about the broader implications for Ukraine’s European integration process.
