Denmark Avoids Activating NATO’s Article 4 in Response to September Drone Incidents

Chas Pravdy - 26 September 2025 20:20

The Danish government has officially stated that the country has no current plans to invoke Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty following a series of drone-related incidents that occurred on September 22 and 24.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced on Thursday that Denmark is still considering the possibility of initiating discussions at the NATO North Atlantic Council level, but assured that this is not part of their immediate plans.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized that Copenhagen does not intend to turn to NATO and maintains close contacts with allies within the Alliance framework.

The drone situation emerged at the end of September, when unknown unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were detected, leading to the shutdown of Denmark’s largest airport.

Similar alerts were also reported around military facilities in Norway, raising security concerns across the region.

The Danish defense minister admitted that the response of security forces to the drone sightings had been somewhat slow in the beginning, but significant improvements have been made, including enhanced security measures and faster detection and neutralization operations.

Experts note that it is crucial to remain calm and avoid escalation, emphasizing diplomatic solutions and increased cooperation with allies to strengthen regional security amidst the growing drone threat.
