The Feast of St. John the Evangelist: Traditions, Restrictions, and Folk Beliefs in Ukraine

John the Evangelist’s Day, physical heavy work such as washing, cleaning, sewing, or crafts should be avoided.
This is believed to maintain spiritual purity and prevent misunderstandings.
Alcohol consumption is also discouraged, serving as part of spiritual cleansing.
Engaging in divination or fortune-telling during this time is considered a sin; therefore, it is better to abstain from any magical practices.Folk signs related to this day include weather predictions and harvest forecasts: gathering clouds indicate upcoming rain and gloomy weather; rain on this day promises a plentiful mushroom harvest; molting poultry suggests a warm winter; a red moon on the night of September 26 forecasts strong winds.
However, it is important to remember that any form of fortune-telling is forbidden during this day, as it is viewed as a sin and a violation of the spiritual purity associated with the celebration.
