On September 26th, believers of the Eastern Christian tradition in Ukraine observe a significant day dedicated to the memory of one of the most revered apostles — John the Theologian.

This saint was not only among the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ but also His favorite student, entrusted with the care of the Virgin Mary after Christ’s ascension.

The celebration begins the day before, with believers gathering in churches for communal prayers, reaching out to the apostle for healing, prosperity, and divine protection.

It is customary to confess and partake in communion on this holy day—practices rooted in the teachings of John the Theologian, who through his sermons and writings drew countless followers into Christianity.

Those unable to visit the church can pray at home, within family circles, preserving the spiritual atmosphere of the holiday.

Special emphasis is placed on prayers to the apostle, asking for his intercession and blessings for oneself and loved ones.

Moreover, spiritual events and quiet prayers help worshippers reflect on life’s core values.

The prayer of the day is profound and beseeches the apostle: “Great apostle John, evangelist, perfect theologian, you saw divine revelations awaited by humanity.

Accept us, sinners, under your intercession, and obtain mercy and blessings from the Most Merciful Christ, our Lord, illuminate our hearts and minds so that we may live righteously and adhere to God’s commandments.

Grant us spiritual and physical health, fill us with goodness and grace, and guide us on the path of salvation.

Help us receive strength and inspiration through your prayers and good deeds so that we may glorify God’s name, our Creator, Savior, and Lord—today and forever.

Amen.” The tradition of celebrating this day reminds us of the importance of spiritual preparation, unity in faith, and honoring saints who serve as true examples for generations.

It is a time to remember the vital role of Apostle John in spreading Christianity and preserving its core values in the modern world.
